BKPT Debug

Arm and RISC-V debugging in VS Code

Debug Arm Cortex-M and supported RISC-V targets with ST-LINK, J-Link, or FTDI JTAG adapters. Inspect source, registers, memory, and execution history in one VS Code workspace.

Windows · macOS · Linux · No paid license required to debug

BKPT DEBUG / A LIVE DEBUG SESSION
Play the product tour. Arrange as many or as few views as you need.
01 / CONNECT

Use your existing probe.

Connect to Arm Cortex-M with ST-LINK or J-Link, or to supported RISC-V targets with FTDI JTAG. AMD MicroBlaze V designs connect through the MicroBlaze Debug Module V (MDM V) BSCAN interface.

02 / ATTACH

Keep your flash workflow.

BKPT Debug attaches to programmed firmware and checks it against your ELF. Flash your board using your existing tools.

03 / INVESTIGATE

Follow the evidence.

Bring fault status, source, live values, and trace into the same workspace. Save the layout with your project.

Debugging capabilities

Catch the fault at the exception.

On Arm Cortex-M, decode HardFault, BusFault, MemManage, UsageFault, and SecureFault status. Recover the stacked frame and navigate to the faulting source, without adding a firmware fault handler.

Watch variables while the target runs.

Pick variables from your ELF and follow values or graphs while halted or stepping, and while running on targets with live memory access. Probe polling up to 1 kHz is included free and needs no recorder library.

Live watch docs ↗

Find where the CPU spends its time.

On compatible Arm Cortex-M targets, see hot functions and per-line heat with live PC sampling. Probe polling is free; on-chip DWT sampling over SWO uses the trace recording allowance.

PC sampling docs ↗

Look back through execution.

Use Arm ETM or RISC-V N-Trace on compatible targets with an on-chip trace buffer. Inspect instruction history, flame graphs, and historical disassembly after a breakpoint or pause, or a supported fault stop.

Hardware trace docs ↗

Put the target beside your code.

Arrange call stacks, breakpoints, registers, memory, peripheral views, and source in one dockable workspace. Keep the views your investigation needs.

Peripheral inspection docs ↗

Keep the trace with the investigation.

Inspect session recordings in synchronized timeline, graph, event, and task-detail views. Upgrade to Pro when the free capture window is too short.

Free debugging and Pro recording

A paid ViewAlyzer license removes the free trace recording limits in both apps.

The debugger is free.

Stepping, breakpoints, stacks, registers, memory, and peripheral inspection for Arm Cortex-M and supported RISC-V targets. Live variable watch uses the target's available memory access; fault analysis and PC sampling are Cortex-M features.

Arm ETM and RISC-V N-Trace history are included on compatible targets with an on-chip trace buffer.

Pro extends trace recording.

Free ITM/SWO captures run for 5 seconds with a 5-second cooldown. RTOS recording includes 5 seconds of active acquisition per recording.

Pro removes those free recording limits and the 10-lane cap in ViewAlyzer recording analysis.
